I read “The State of Siege” by Albert Camus many years ago, when I was a student at the Academy of Theatre in Florence. I was far away from my birthplace, Messina, and far away from the sea, my sea. Far away from a town, which at that time was too narrow for me and far away from the gift which has always made me love Messina: the sea-sight.
In this work by Camus, in each part of it the protagonist is the sea. A sea which is opposed to the numerous prisons which the world or the men have built. A Mediterranean full of antiquity as the History tells us, an invitation to run towards the wind, the salt, in order not to infect the future of the History itself.
And the anger of this sea is ours and is ours the deep wish of a world without walls and doors. So it is the sea.
But we are at the same time made of the same blue and abyss, of sky and illnesses. And the world older and older can just dream cradling waves, virgin beaches where the sand has got the freshness of young lips. In Camus there is also this sorrow: the awareness which the seed of the Plague will never die in spite of the man who often tries to recover.
The Plague, the Dictatorship, the Power of the men crushes other men, they are monsters who change their face, who make up to disguise themselves and open their horrible teeth in nice and gaining smile.
Camus tells us that it needs to brandish the sword: fighting with love and trust inside the freedom. The theatre is that. It is amusement and rebellion, beauty and mirror of our ugliness, darkness and lightness of our towns.
